The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Recently i saw an interesting book online with the weirdest title. So i couldn't help it and bought it. Received it about a week later and read :

"The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" - Mary Ann shaffer & Annie barrows

... ... ... ...
OK.
1st reaction : "Who would write a book with a title like that???"
after 5 seconds of digesting : "What is it about?"

So i couldn't resist and read the synopsis :

"Its 1946 and Juliet ashton can't think what to write next.
Out of the blue, she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams of Guernsey - by chance, he's acquired a book that once belonged to her - and, spurred on by their mutual love of reading, they begin a correspondence.
When Dawsey reveals that he is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society , Juliet's curiosity is piqued and its not long before she begins to hear from other members. As letters fly back and forth with stories of Life in Guernsey under the German occupation, Juliet soon realises that the society is every bit as extraordinary as its name"

Then yeah i clicked on the buttons "Check out cart"

-The End-

Hahahahaha ok~

From the synopsis above, you already know that this book has got something to do with the 2nd World war given the year "1946" and the words "German Occupation".
Something about me that many don't know, i have always loved to read books and watch movies on war. Its like i literally read and watch as many war plots as possible. Especially on the *coughs - nazis - coughs*

This book however is entirely different from the many plots i have read and watched.

Ok, spoiler alert but i will try my best not to ruin for you on what my thoughts on the book ok?

The book is actually very light, written in a way like a compilation of telegrams and letters, you are reading from the perspective of the main character. Juliet.

The letters and telegrams that she sent and received to and fro from her best friends/ publisher (in case you didn't realise and thinking on the synopsis "can't think of what to write next" yes she is a writer) and suddenly the start of a man named Dawsey Adams and members of the "Society"

This "Society" is basically formed by a group of people who were merely seeking survival in the beginning and "accidentally" formed a literary society.

Yep, a Book club

In this modern day, it will be more like making virtual friends, then meet up cos yeah you talk on "meet up" , rsvp-ing via email.

Usually war plots speak a lot on how it was torturous and deaths, endless pain, sorrow, inhuman soldiers and yes, i can't stress DEATH enough... which is very heavy but this plot actually spoke more on trying to survive hunger, making friends from all walks of life, even speaking on the soft sides of  the soldiers involved in the war

(ok fine, i agree not every one is sadistic)

But, of cos all books and plots has to have either a man that is totally made up = FAKE because of his perfection as a man **rolls eyes* or there's got to be a severe psycho egomaniac narcissist rich man that thinks he can have everything in the world he wants because he's got all the *cha ching*!!! $$$$$

So... yeah plah~~~
And of cos you are not gonna like the **cha ching** man and you will dream of meeting the man that does not exist. Omg. am i being condescending? LOL

ok, anyway, Juliet then decides that she wants to RSVP to the meet up and went ahead cos she wanted to know more, which she eventually did and never looked back ever since.
There is not much death in this book, nothing too heavy, but more of unified friendships, women's limited life choices that were actually options (**facepalm**) less than a hundred years ago.
Its an interesting read because of the realism of how many different people are there in the world who don't agree with each other, may not even like or know one another but being able to stand together during the hardest of times.

Long story short, its how people handled relationships be it friends, family or unintended enemies. Sweet and warm. Not boring at all. Its actually really beautiful. A change of war plots, where you don't find in majority of books addressing such topics.

The story ended well and ~ sort of expected but yeah like i said its an entirely different kind of war plot. i loved it. It was actually an easy and quick read that you can finish in one sitting.

I give it 3.5 stars / 5
